What a fantastic game of rugby that was!
Firstly thank you to @lewes_rfc for such an enthralling encounter and we look forward to the return fixture later in the season.
To use the age old cliché, this really was a game of two halves.
A strong start from Lewes saw them take an early lead as Uckfield were slow to get out of the blocks. It took 3 unanswered trys to spark the Acorns into life.
The boys of URFC finished the first half with intent and drive and crossed the whitewash to dot down their first try of the encounter.
A rousing team talk at half time from head coach Joel Forward saw the second half start at a hundred miles an hour with Uckfield on the front foot, utilising their structure to their advantage and it wasn’t long until they were rewarded with another try.
Lewes then returned with with a fast breakaway try to regain the upper hand. The purple and golds however, held their nerve and started to string multiple phases together and began to show their fitness and determination scoring the next try. Some fantastic place kicking from skipper Charlie Buckland eased the Acorns into a contestable position.
Then on came the cavalry in the form of Nick Cherry and Colin Bradley. The impact of these players was what the side needs and some pinpoint passing from Cherry and precision darts from Bradley produced another try to take the men in Purple and Gold into the lead.
With a withing their reach, the Acorns continued to apply the pressure and were rewarded for their efforts after a well executed driving lineout resulted in a try for Club Captain Steve Hartfield.
A fantastic match for the neutral, an emotional rollercoaster for the Uckfield faithful. A great day for rugby, and another win for the Acorns.
Well done boys, you’ve earned a rest next weekend.
