Match Report

Last Sunday the Uckfield U14 Girls travelled to Horsham for a post-Christmas friendly. Unfortunately, due to late arrangements, we were only able to field 13 girls. However, Horsham kindly made up the numbers for us ensuring the maximum number of girls got to play.
A cold and very wet pitch greeted the girls at the 9am meeting time. The girls were nervous, with one of our players starting her first ever match. Uckfield started strongly using powerful runners to penetrate deep into Horsham territory. However, a slight knock on at a ruck allowed Horsham to regain the ball, and score a break away try against the run of play – putting Horsham 7 up 5 mins into the match.
The girls then hit back with straight running, quick rucks, and utilising the speed in our backs to score a try out wide (score now 7-5). Horsham came back strongly, and scored 2 unanswered tries to stretch the lead to 19-5. The girls then really started to battle, and gained the upper hand in the second half. Our aggressive defence shutting down Horsham’s speed out wide, speeding up our own rucks, and mixing up our attacking play with route 1 runners, as well as spreading the ball wide with the backs. Uckfield scored a try to pull the score back slightly (19-10).
Unfortunately Uckfield had 2 tries disallowed in the second half – 1 for an accidental offside, and 1 held up over the line.
Final score: Horsham 19-10 Uckfield – a very competitive match, played in great spirits – we are looking forward to the return fixture.
