Peter Taylor – Day 2 – Cheriton to East Meon

Today Peter’s route starts in Cheriton and finishes in East Meon, approximately 25km. An anticipated 6 hour hike in total today, Peter reports stunning scenery en route!

From Peter:

Today was tough. 2 difficult hills that I could only get up in crawler gear!

Arriving at the pub, today’s final destination Ye Olde George Inn, 5 minutes before it closed at 3PM! Time for some grub and well-deserved rest. With 7 days left to go, the mileage so far is approximately 45km (or 28 miles!). Some lovely, but hard earned, sights on the journey today, some hidden gems in the fields.

Today’s interesting challenge. After Exton I found the south downs path blocked off. As there was no notice and I could not see any problems I climbed over the barrier and carried on. Half a mile later I found the problem. The path had become a fast flowing stream. So I carried on. Half a mile of walking in a stream with the water to the top of my boots. Funnily enough I did not see anyone else on this section of the path! 2 wet feet, socks and trousers!

Another depressing sign at the start of day two. I am currently 2 hours into today's 6 hour hike. Stunning scenery!
The trigonometry point at beacon Hill nature reserve. Having a pit stop in Exton for a coffee.
A world war two memorial remote in a field - The Horses Memorial.
Winchester Hill
The East meon disused railway line.
Site of the iron age fort. 4 hours into the 6 hour walk.
Inside East Meon Church
East Meon Fisheries
The finishing point - East Meon Church, getting closer and closer!
I came across Alan's coffee van run by a guy called Andy. 1 pound for a tea and 1.30 for a piece of cake. Cheap at twice the price !
This is my billet for tonight. The pub shut at 3 pm. I arrived with 5 minutes to spare. A hard day ! This is a very pretty village. I will send more photographs later.
Approaching East meon. Spot the church.
Two days done. Seven to go !
