Hastings & Bexhill vs Uckfield

On a dry but blustery Saturday afternoon in Hastings, Uckfield took to the field for a 2:30pm kick-off against Hastings & Bexhill in what was arranged as a friendly training match, played in four quarters.

Ryan played scrum half for the first time

Uckfield began the game strongly, showing the solid structures and attacking shape that new coaches Sandy and Kieran have been drilling over the summer. The opening exchanges were evenly matched, but it was Hastings who crossed the whitewash first to take the lead. Uckfield hit back with a well-deserved try of their own, finished off by Alfie Mitchell after a sustained and relentless forward-driven attack.

Unfortunately, injuries soon took their toll on the visitors. Rhys suffered a dislocated shoulder, and as the game wore on, Uckfield were left with just 13 men on the field. In true rugby spirit, Hastings kindly lent Uckfield two players to keep the contest competitive.

A special shoutout goes to Ryan, who played scrum half for the first time and did so very well.

As the match progressed, Hastings added further tries, and while Uckfield’s depleted side fought well, they were unable to respond on the scoreboard. The game finished 21-5 in favour of Hastings.

Despite the result, there were plenty of positives to take away: players learning new positions, newcomers making their debuts, seasoned heads leading from the front, and even a spectator stepping in to help when injuries struck. Credit also goes to the two Hastings players who pulled on Uckfield shirts to ensure the match could be played in the right spirit.

Final Score: Hastings & Bexhill 21 – 5 Uckfield

Uckfield now look ahead with determination, focusing on rebuilding squad depth, sharpening combinations, and building on the hard work already laid down this summer.
