After 2 wins on the trot for the 2nd XV the local derby against Newick was going to be a big game and as always, hard fought.
Newick turned up with a large pack and this showed early in the game with Rumary trying to cameo as a prop.
The first try went to Uckfield with Bates cutting and weaving through the Newick backs and placing the ball to the right of the posts. The try was converted by Bredin.
Newick rallied scoring 10 minutes later by their player breaking a number of tackles.
Uckfield’s second try came from a ruck 10m from the line with the ball being spun wide out to Connell, who put the ball down in the corner leaving Newick watching. A non conversion made the score 12-7 at half time.
The second half started with Newick kicking off to Uckfield.
17 minutes into the 2nd half Newick broke from a maul at around the half way line, and due to a couple of missed tackles from our side allowed them to score and convert.
15 minutes before the end Abe kicked the ball over their backs from the away teams 22 line and with a perfect bounce put the ball down for it to be converted.
Uckfield then spent the last 10 mins of the game seated in Newick 22 to see out the game which resulted in an Uckfield 17-14 win over their neighbours.
A big thank you goes to Heathfield for sending George and Ellis who made up numbers and allowed for the game to be played.
